The teacher of the month for September, 2001 was unanimously selected by our panel. The winner is Veera Behrooz Sabzeh, Nasr School, Hyderabad.

PROFILE

Veera Behrooz Sabzeh was born and brought up in Bombay. She did her schooling from J. B. Petit School, Bombay. Learning at the school, influenced by the Principal who had just returned from the US, was innovative and fun. Due to her father's job in the bank as the Legal advisor, the family was able to tour the whole of India and see first hand the bounty of Indian culture and customs.

After school she majored in Commerce from the H R College in Bombay and went on to do her masters. She also did her B.Ed from Annamalai University.

She shifted to Hyderabad after marriage and began teaching at Nasr School, where she still teaches after 14 years. It is here that she met, in her words, '…the most influencing person in my life. She reminded me of my own Principal in school and that was Begum Anees Khan who made me realise where my real calling lay. She taught me lots of things by setting her own example.'

About the school she tells us, 'Teaching at Nasr is not in the conventional way at all. There are lots of projects and hands-on learning experiences. The teacher is a friend first and then a teacher. The atmosphere between the students and the teachers is one of love and affection and needs to be experienced in order to be believed.'

The Internet and the treasure trove of knowledge it offers, drew her to it. She did a course on the basics of computers and was able to exchange ideas with teachers all over the globe. She loves taking part in competitions and writing articles for magazines and for the Internet. Some of her articles on the sites of interest to children and what these offer, were published in several issues of Computers@Home.

She was also awarded the Best Teacher's award by the school in appreciation of her services
