PROFILE
Ms Esther Pillai, Principal, Cambridge School,
Bangalore has a teaching experience that spans
three decades.
Ms
Pillai, who did her BEd from Annamalai University,
completed her graduation as well as post-graduation
in English from Lady Shri Ram College, New Delhi
in 1973 and 1975 respectively. She began teaching
soon after when she joined as lecturer of English
at the prestigious Jamia Millia College, Jamia
Millia University, New Delhi where she taught
at the graduate level for two academic sessions.
Ms Pillai later taught at Mount
Carmel College and Jyoti Nivas College, Bangalore
University. She moved to Bishop Cotton Girls'
High School, Bangalore, in 1989 where she served
as Head of the English Department, and later as
Vice Principal. She served the school for 15 long
years before joining the Cambridge School where
she was soon promoted to the post of the Principal.
Ms
Pillai worked closely with the BBC under the UGC
scheme of 1993 and developed programmes demonstrating
the use of English at the high school level in
India for worldwide broadcast. She also worked
with the World Book Company as Public Relations
Consultant and introduced essential encyclopaedic
work for school children; served as examiner,
English, with the ISC and the ICSE from 1993 to
1998; and edited Sunglow, a magazine about education
for children and parents.
Ms
Pillai's achievements lie in her experiences as
a Principal, teacher, guide, and academician.
These varied experiences have certainly given
her an edge when it comes to understanding what
children need and must be provided with. "A
child's character, intelligence and personality
are embedded in him in the early formative years
and therefore it is the teacher's responsibility
to build his character, hone his intelligence
and groom him into a mature, responsible adult
and global citizen," she says.
