PROFILE
Srijaya Char has been an English
teacher since 1960, soon after her graduation.
She went on to do her Masters in English only
for the love of the English Language and because
she wanted to learn more about Linguistics. 'I
was not trained, when I started teaching' she
says; but coming from a family of teachers, it
perhaps was a genetic trait ingrained within and
the hands-on experience with children was the
best training. Though she did her Teachers' Training
and also a Master's in Education at a later stage,
what she enjoyed best was being with children
and learning how they learn a language. She completed
her Certificate in the Teaching of English from
the Regional Institute of English, Bangalore.
She also did a diploma in Book Publishing from
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bombay and a diploma in
Journalism and Mass Communication from the Oxford
College of Education, Calcutta.
As a Railway Engineer's wife
her stint of teaching was broken every 2 to 3
years whenever there was a transfer. She taught
in various railway schools from 1963 to 1984,
often in an honorary capacity. It was only in
the 70's, when her own children's education made
her decide to stay at one place that she took
up teaching as a full-time career. She was appointed
Lecturer in English in 1984 for a year on a part-time
basis at the MLA Junior College, Bangalore. She
joined Vidya Niketan School, Bangalore run under
the auspices of Kasturba Education Trust in 1985,
and has been working there since then. She officiated
as the Vice-Principal of the school from 1987
to 2001.
Srijaya has published a number
of articles in journals and newspapers on children
and women's issues and been a columnist for a
reputed newspaper for nearly 5 years. She has
also attended a number of conferences and seminars
on education, presenting papers on a few occasions.
Now, at the age of 60, Srijaya
has been re-appointed as the Joint Director of
Academy and Administration at the Vidya Niketan
School. She continues to teach a few classes and
assists teachers in innovations in education.
She is also responsible for imparting Value Education
for the middle and high school students.
