The teacher of the month for May, 2006 was unanimously selected. The winner is
Vaswati Lahiri, English and Environmental Studies teacher, Heritage School, Gurgaon.

PROFILE

Vaswati Lahiri teaches English and Environmental Studies at Heritage School, Gurgaon.

Ms Lahiri is a Loreto House, Kolkata, alumni. She completed her graduation and BEd in English and History from Loreto College, Kolkata.

Ms Lahiri started her career by teaching at the Abhinav Bharati School, Kolkata, where she taught students at the junior level. She later joined the prestigious St James' School, Kolkata in 1996 before moving to Delhi.

Ms Lahiri has a way with young children. While at St James', she developed theme-oriented play-way methods of teaching language, literature, number work and computers for beginners. She helped compile an in-house workbook of Mental Mathematics for classes 1 and 2. She also trained students in elocution to help them appreciate the beauty of the spoken language.

A trained classical singer, Ms Lahiri has also excelled herself in training and teaching students in diverse fields like Mental Mathematics, Music, Drama, Moral Science, Art and Craft, etc. She has directed, scripted and scored the music for school plays in many annual concerts.

As Assistant Cub Master for Bharat Scouts and Guides, Ms Lahiri has oganised Scout camps for children between the age group of 8-17 years.

Ms Lahiri says teaching in school also entails developing a child's overall personality. She also added that it is the teacher's responsibility to create a healthy and amiable environment for students to grow in body and mind.
