PROFILE
Shyamala Gopinath has been teaching English language
and literature in Sophia High School, Bangalore,
for more than 25 years.
An
alumnus of distinguished institutions of Bangalore,
Ms Gopinath did her schooling from Baldwin Girls
High School in 1963, graduation from Mount Carmel
College in 1968 and BEd from Bangalore University
in 1981. She completed Masters in English from
Annamalai University, Chennai in 1999.
She started her teaching career
from St Joseph's High School, Kolar Gold Fields,
in 1981 before joining the staff of Sophia High
School by the end of the same year.
Ms
Gopinath has also done a course in the English
Language from the Regional Institute of English,
Bangalore. Apart from this, she has attended several
workshops on education and other areas of human
resource development.
She
has been conferred several awards. Among these
are the Best Teacher award by the SSLC Board and
Excellent English Teacher award by the Lion's
Club of India.
The
sincere educationist has well-informed and well-formed
views on education, which are acknowledged by
her peers. At an inter-school teachers' debate
on 'Education Should Cater to the All Round Development
of the Child, Based on the Present Needs', she
spoke for the topic and won the debate. She argued
that teachers should try bringing out the best
in their students by helping them shed their inhibitions
so that they realise their latent talents and
potentials. After much debate, participants from
40 schools agreed to her view that teachers should
focus on a child's present and this would take
care of his tomorrow.
Teaching
is not her only forte. The veteran teacher is
also trained in Indian classical music and well
versed with the piano and the harmonium. She plays
badminton, throw ball and is also an avid swimmer.
She loves to read books on poetry and philosophy.
Her accomplishments have made her a popular personality,
widely loved and revered by friends and students
alike.
