PROFILE
Arunashankar Deb is a senior teacher of Geography
at Calcutta International School, Kolkata.
Mr
Deb did his schooling from La Martiniere School,
Kolkata. He graduated with Honours from Ashutosh
College, Kolkata in 1971, and did his Masters
from Calcutta University, Kolkata in 1973 and
Masters in Regional Planning from IIT Kharagpur
in 1977.
He
began teaching in 1978 as a senior Geography teacher
in Kolkata's Frank Anthony Public School.
Mr
Deb was not content merely teaching. Through Unnayan,
an NGO, he found a platform to put his area of
specialisation to practical usage. He did several
research-related social development projects for
them.
During
the 20 years that he has been with Unnayan, Mr
Deb has done research in Post Disaster Housing
Reconstruction in Vamsadhara Valley of Koraput
district in Orissa, research in Urban Transport
on non-motorised modes such as use of cycle rickshaw
in India and studies in housing problems of the
urban poor.
Mr
Deb is Form Tutor of the 'A' level Humanities
Department at the Calcutta International School.
The school subscribes to the 'O' and 'A' level
Edexcel Board syllabus, London University.
Mr
Deb is also concerned with organising field trips,
excursions and treks for the students to make them
"knowledgeable about the cultural and environmental
heritage of India". He is very keenly involved
with such activities as he feels that education
today has become very syllabus and examination oriented.
"The focus, today, is on performance. Education
is more controlled and seems to be viewed more as
an industry rather as a system of learning,"
he says.
Apart
from being a conscientious teacher and a dedicated
social worker, Mr Deb is an avid photographer.
