Krishna Nandy, Lakshmipat Singhania Academy, Kolkata.

PROFILE

Krishna Nandy, is a creative, dedicated teacher who firmly believes in the everlasting qualities of the English language. She works with classes six to ten at Lakshmipat Singhania Academy, Kolkata. ‘Bubbling with enthusiasm’ is how her co-workers describe her.

Krishna is a B. A with English Honours and an M.A in English. She received her B.Ed degree from the Guwahati University and ranked fifth in the University. She has been teaching for seven years now. She started teaching English for class XI at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Tejpur. She then shifted to Kolkata, where she taught spoken English at the Indo-American society. She also did a short stint at La Martiniere for Girls, teaching English from class six to nine.

Krishna’s knowledge of subject and innovative teaching methods are known to elicit complete class involvement. She has a special skill for training students. She displays genuine concern towards her students and makes the learning of the English language an enjoyable experience for all age groups.

“Introducing an ‘element of surprise’ is one of the best ways of capturing a child’s attention”, is what Krishna says. She employs the methods of acrostics in her teaching to spark the child’s interest and intensify his/her imagination, while in the process achieving the purpose of the lesson taught.

She considers it her greatest achievement to have received thanks from the parent of a student with a learning disability who she had helped secure a rank in class. Her wide range of teaching levels has led her to believe that children do not change much over the years and remain sensitive, caring and hungry for love even in the highest class. She says in the primary level, teachers need to win the ‘love’ of children and at secondary, their ‘trust’.

She also makes a clear distinction between the requirements of teaching a child who primarily speaks English at home and one who speaks another language. The former will have ‘caught’ the grammar, and will write correctly - irrespective of his knowledge of the rules, while the latter will have to be ‘taught’ and is likely to make mistakes in spite of knowing the rules. This has led her to believe that to do well in English, it has to be constantly spoken.

Krishna is herself active in extra-curricular activities. She’s one of the teachers in charge of the cookery and craft class of the school. ‘Crafty Cooks’ is what they call themselves.

Her faith and appreciation of the English language is boundless. She elucidates on the flexibility of the language and how it has the power to incorporate new words from languages across the world.

Krishna Nandy has been a recipient of certificates from Intel, Human Learning and various other organizations. She is also a volunteer in a breast cancer support organization and is highly appreciated among her co-workers.
