The teacher of the month for January, 2002 was unanimously selected by our panel. The winner is Ms Nuzar Mannan, K V No 1, Salt Lake, Kolkata.

PROFILE

Ms Nuzar Mannan passed out of higher secondary from West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and won the National Scholarship. She did her BA (English Honours) from Calcutta University, followed by an MA in English and a BEd also from Calcutta University.

Ms Mannan has been teaching for the last twenty years. She started her teaching career by joining Loreto (ICSE), Asansol, where she taught English to classes IX and X for four years. This was followed by a five-years at A G Church School, Asansol. For the next five years she taught classes XI and XII at Deepika English Medium School (CBSE), Rourkela. In 1993, she joined Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan as a PGT and was posted at Bondamunda, from where she was subsequently transferred to K V No 1, Salt Lake, Kolkata, where she is currently teaching.

Ms Nuzar Mannan says her teaching experience at Bondamunda has been the most rewarding on the professional front. Bondamunda, a rural area of Orissa, lacked the proper environment for conducive English language teaching. Three years of mutual and sustained effort paid dividends when twenty out of thirty students who appeared in class X Board Examination attained 1st division in English and the rest 2nd division, bringing the result to 100% in English.

She personally feels that every child is different and the methods used in classrooms should be flexible enough to meet the individual requirements of the child, at the same time ensuring interactive class participation.
