The teacher of the month for February, 2004 was unanimously selected. The winner is
Rajalaksmi Karthikeyan, Head of the Department of Chemistry,
Mother’s International School, Delhi.


PROFILE

Rajalaksmi Karthikeyan is the Head of the Department of Chemistry at Mother’s International School, Delhi. A dedicated teacher she has contributed to the field of Chemistry in a very big way. Her role in the making of three educational films in Chemistry for NIEPA and the All India Association for Educational Technology (AIETA) for the under privileged children of Novadaya Schools is a pointer to her tremendous potential and organisational skills. An excellent coordinator, she guided her students in making projects on India and her rich cultural heritage for a world magazine brought out by Benesse Corp, Tokyo, Japan. One of the participants under her guidance won the first prize in this competition.

She is closely involved with writing lessons in Chemistry and editing packages of science literature for the National Open School. She is also the Resource Person for their coordinators and educators.

An innovative and dynamic person, she has co-authored a book on Triggering Interest in Chemistry entitled, A Topsy Turvy Session in Chemistry. It was published by DST,NCSTC network. A progressive teacher, she is a member of several expert committees including the syllabus framing and review team of NCERT for development of textbooks for classes XI and XII. She was honored with the Best Teacher Award at the state level by the Rotary Club of Delhi Rajdhani, for outstanding contribution and dedication to the teaching profession in 1995. She was felicitated by the former Minister of State for Science and Technology, Prof. V K Alagh for presenting, Innovative Experiments in Chemistry on National Science Day 1998.

Ms Karthikeyan has a multi-talented personality. She is a trained Bharatnatyam dancer and poet. Her poems written in response to the September 11 attacks were conferred the Editor’s Choice Award by Poetry.com.
