PROFILE
Jyoti Mehrotra teaches English
at the BES International Vidyalaya, Mumbai. She
believes that there cannot be two opinions with
regard to the place that English has made for
itself in the present education system. In her
opinion, students coming from various cultural
and economic backgrounds are keenly enthusiastic
to learn the language. A key factor to this, she
feels, is the desire to understand their favourite
television shows better.
Jyoti believes that this enthusiasm on the students’
part is advantageous to the English teachers whereby
they can make the teaching-learning process an
enjoyable one by adopting a communicative approach.
This would aid in enriching the language of the
learner and help him to articulate his thoughts
and feelings and make his world more meaningful
and expressive.
She has had the experience of
dealing with various classes. She notes that as
students are now exposed to English since their
early schooling, it is no longer a foreign language.
The learner can relate to the language but lacks
the ability to use correct grammar. Her observations
have led her to conclude that the learner needs
to be convinced that grammar is not so difficult
after all. She also believes that constantly organising
competitions such as essay writing, story writing,
elocution, drama, debate etc. go a long way in
creating confidence amongst students and familiarity
with the language.
Jyoti has actively contributed
in bringing out the school magazine. She also
has a keen interest in the write-ups published
on the school website.
