PROFILE
Ms Surekha Tungar has 38 years of experience as
a teacher. At present she teaches Biology in St
James' School, Kolkata.
She
did her schooling from Holy Cross Convent, Amravati
and St Joseph's Convent, Nagpur. She completed
her graduation and post graduation from the Institute
of Science, Nagpur and her BEd from Regional College
of Education, Bhopal.
Ms Tungar began teaching in Kendriya
Vidyalaya, Nagpur, in 1967 and subsequently moved
to Kolkata, after her marriage in 1974. In Kolkata
she taught at Modern High School and Frank Anthony
Public School before joining St James' School
in 1994.
Ms
Tungar has been part of the CISE board's evaluation
programme. She has attended several teaching workshops
and conducted one on Internal Assessment for the
board, along with other experts in the field.
Ms
Tungar has also authored books on Biology for
Classes IX and X for the ICSE course.
The
seasoned teacher feels that teaching should never
be treated as a mechanical job. "A teacher
needs to be involved in the teaching-learning
process with her students", she says, adding
that all activities in the classroom and the laboratory
should be directed towards developing the concepts.
Ms Tungar, who is due to retire soon, believes
that the warmth and affection, which she has received
from her students over the years, have been her
greatest reward as a teacher.
