PROFILE
Indrani Banerji has been teaching
English at G. D. Birla Centre for Education for
19 years. She received her Masters degree in English
from Delhi University and her B Ed from the Loreto
College, Calcutta University.
She believes that to make teaching enjoyable and
interesting, various methods such as ‘debates’
and ‘role play’ need to be employed. Activities
such as making students act out bit roles from
plays of Shakespeare help in inspiring class involvement.
The shy and withdrawn pupils are drawn into conversation
and role-play.
Her colleagues think of her as
a very amiable, co-operative and compatible person.
Indrani has participated in various
workshops on English and maintains her enthusiasm
for the language by attending training courses
like those conducted by the ICSE Council. She
is a recipient of certificates from Hourly ELT
Seminar and Intel. She has also been a keen participant
of the British Council one-act plays held at various
schools.
Indrani considers it her greatest
achievement to have received acknowledgement and
thanks from parents and students alike for helping
them secure a rank in class. She invests special
effort to help weaker pupils in becoming confident
in their studies as well as in co-curricular activities.
She teaches English from classes
viii to x. Having taught students of different
classes and different age groups has led her to
believe that teachers must try to understand the
psychology of a child to aid proper mental development.
According to her, children are extremely sensitive
and desire attention and wish to be loved and
cared for.
Indrani views the English language
as ‘boundless’. She believes that it must be taught
from a very early age so that a child may have
a strong foundation and a good grasp of the subject.
Especially because it is one of the most important
mediums of expression in schools, colleges and
workplaces.
In her opinion, the future of
English –in one word- is bright.
