PROFILE
Ms Sonika Verma, our teacher this month is a young achiever
whose resume enlists awards and recognitions galore.
To begin
with, Ms Verma an MPhil from the Delhi
University teaches in DLF Public School,
Ghaziabad.
She completed her BSc (honours in Zoology) and MSc (specialisation in
Entomology) from Hans Raj College,
Delhi University, getting a gold
medal in each, and was also adjudged the 'best student' of the year
2000. The University
of Sydney
awarded her the Alexander Memorial Award for one of her research
papers. She did her B Ed from Dayal
Bagh University,
Agra.
Having
cleared the NET examinations in 2003, Ms Verma is a qualified
lecturer but opted to be a school teacher instead. She began teaching
in SD Public School Pitampura, Delhi.
Here, she assisted students on various science projects which won her
the best teacher award from Bhartiya Vigyan Parishad and ensured that
her name figured in the list of best teachers from Delhi for the Teacher's Day honours
in the year 2006.
Along
with her teaching assignments, she continued to assist various
professors in Delhi
University in
preparing permanent entomological slides. She was actively involved
in the collection and preservation of live insects for the Zoological Museum
in Delhi
University.
Marriage
and a shift to Udhampur later, she started to teach at the local
Kendriya Vidyalaya where her projects began making waves
internationally. Her entry on a project on chinaberry was awarded
fourth prize at the Intel International Science Engineering Fair
2006, Indianapolis,
USA.
Recently, another of her projects 'Control of Household Pests by
Indigenous Products' was selected for the International Exhibition of
Young Invention 2008. It is no wonder then that she was invited for a
meeting by former President APJ Abdul Kalam at the Rashtrapati
Bhawan.
Being
someone who strongly believes that Science is best learnt by hands-on
experience, Ms Verma lends a helping hand to all budding scientists
and is an area coordinator for all Science workshops and exhibitions
organised by Intel.
The
modules developed by her have helped students prepare for their
pre-medical examinations. She is truly a role model for her students
and inspires them to reach beyond academic pursuits.
